General election reaction

13 Jun 2017

We set out our thoughts following the UK general election.

Karen Betts, Scotch Whisky Association chief executive, said: "Scotch Whisky, like all industries, thrives best when the political and regulatory outlook is certain. This enables us to plan ahead with confidence. We are now urging politicians to reach agreement quickly on the best way forward in the wake of the further uncertainty caused by last week's general election.

"Scotch Whisky is an industry of huge importance to the UK, supporting over 40,000 jobs and exporting more than £4 billion worth of whisky to 182 markets overseas every year. Today we are urging UK politicians to ensure the industry gets the support it needs to ensure its future success. When it comes to Brexit, we will want to see an open trade policy, a comprehensive trade deal with the EU, effective transitional arrangements and consistency through the proposed Great Repeal Bill. At home, we want to see a cut in the onerous near-80% tax burden on an average priced bottle of Scotch and a fairer excise duty system."
