Scotch Whisky Action Fund to tackle alcohol misuse

27 Feb 2017

Fund re-opened for applications

Projects across Scotland working to tackle alcohol related harm are being invited to apply for grants from the Scotch Whisky Action Fund.

The fund was set up in 2013 by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), the industry trade body, to provide awards of £100,000 in total each year until 2018 to initiatives addressing alcohol misuse. The fund extends the SWA's commitment to promoting responsible drinking. It is managed by Foundation Scotland, an independent charity.

The fund is looking to support and develop a range of initiatives that deliver targeted interventions to tackle alcohol-related harms across three areas:

  • Young people (aged under 18)
  • Families
  • Communities

Applications are invited from innovative or pilot initiatives which test new approaches and from existing projects demonstrating success in reducing harm.

Last year seven local initiatives were selected by an awards panel to receive funding. They are spread across Scotland from Hibernian Community Foundation in Edinburgh, which delivers preventative alcohol education to primary school pupils, to the Orkney Alcohol Counselling and Advisory Service (OACAS) which was awarded funding to assist its work in communities. To date, 22 awards have been granted through the fund.

Julie Hesketh-Laird, Scotch Whisky Association acting chief executive, said: "The Action Fund is part of our commitment to tackling alcohol misuse. Our goal is to support projects across Scotland that help prevent and reduce misuse among young people, communities, and families. We want to encourage a wide range of initiatives to apply for support in 2017."

Giles Ruck, Foundation Scotland chief executive, said:  "The fund has supported a range of innovative projects designed to tackle alcohol related harm. We expect to generate a lot of interest from organisations across Scotland again this year that can benefit from this vital funding."

The Scotch Whisky Action Fund independent awards panel is chaired by Professor Dame Joan Stringer. The closing date for applications is 30 June 2017.
