SWA comment on Repeal Bill publication

13 Jul 2017

Karen Betts, Scotch Whisky Association chief executive, said: "We welcome today's publication of the Repeal Bill. As EU laws are brought directly into UK law, it's essential that business stability, certainty and consistency are top of the agenda. It's important for Scotch Whisky producers that all relevant EU laws covering issues such as spirit drink definitions and labelling rules continue to have effect. This also applies to UK laws connected to the European Communities Act. We look forward to working closely with government throughout this process to ensure that any amendments necessary to make EU laws work in the UK are practical and appropriate.

"Looking ahead, the continuing growth of Scotch Whisky should be seen as a litmus test of the success of the UK's exit from the EU. Our top priorities for the negotiations are: a deep and comprehensive trade deal with the EU; securing the benefits of existing EU trade deals with third countries, before the government is able to negotiate new, bilateral, ambitious free trade agreements around the world; frictionless and efficient customs procedures, minimising cost and complexity for exports to the EU; and robust legal protection of Scotch globally.  We would also like the government to use the opportunity of Brexit to put in place domestic tax and regulatory reforms, particularly to the excise regime, to ensure the UK is a sound platform for the industry's continued international growth."
