SWA Raising More Funds For
Macmillan Cancer Support and Water Aid
Glasgow auctioneer McTear's is holding a charity auction on 17
April to bolster the fundraising efforts of an intrepid group of
Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) staff.
Last year, the SWA team cycled to all 107 distilleries across
Scotland to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support Scotland and
WaterAid. The fundraising was part of the SWA's Centenary
Staff at McTear's are supporting the cause by auctioning the
extensive range of bottles that were donated to the cyclists by
distilleries during the trip. Many unusual bottles are among the
range being auctioned and one has been signed by some of the
Scotland Rugby Team.
Over the course of 2012, SWA staff covered almost 2,000 miles
taking in every distillery from Bladnoch in the south of Scotland
to Scapa and Highland Park on Orkney.
Scotch Whisky producers, as well as welcoming the tired
cyclists, supported the impressive challenge by contributing money
to the charities and donating bottles for the cause. To date, just
under £7,500 has been raised for the charities and now McTear's is
looking to add to the tally at the unique auction.
Gavin Hewitt, chief executive of the Scotch Whisky Association,
"Our staff should be very proud of their achievement. A lot of
time and effort has gone into reaching this daunting challenge.
Scotch Whisky distilleries are often in very remote parts of the
country so it wasn't an easy cycle, especially last summer with
unpredictable weather conditions.
"A lot of money has been raised for two very good charities -
Macmillan Cancer Support and WaterAid - and I would like to thank
everyone for the support they provided."
David Gillies, whisky specialist at McTear's, added:
"This is remarkable effort by the SWA team. In addition to
raising a stack of cash on their travels they also secured some
fantastic bottles for the auction and we now hope to attract some
big bids to ensure both of these very worthy charities get an
additional funding boost."
