Stand up for Scotch: Our Global Drink
As the largest net contributor to the UK's balance of trade
in goods, the Scotch Whisky industry is strategically important to
the UK economy.
Following the decision to leave the European Union, and as the UK
looks to forge a new relationship with the world, Scotch Whisky can
truly claim to be our global drink, exporting to nearly 200
countries in every continent. Scotch Whisky has the potential to be
a flag-bearer for successful British trade around the world.
That is why, during a period of considerable uncertainty, Scotch
Whisky requires a strategic, long-term commitment - both at home
and overseas - from government to ensure it is able to maintain and
grow its contribution to the UK economy. This will require a
supportive domestic tax and regulatory environment, as well as
continued partnership to grow exports.
The Scotch Whisky Association is therefore calling on the UK
government to reduce spirits duty by 2% in the first Budget of
2017, and to consider further moves towards excise duty fairness at
future fiscal events.
