Science and Food Safety

Helping the industry manage the food safety and hygiene aspects of Scotch Whisky production is an important part of the SWA's activities.

The Scotch Whisky Association helps members stay abreast of scientific and technological advances to aid understanding of food safety and hygiene that might improve processing and manufacturing efficiency.

An example of the SWA's work in this area is the draft Industry Guide to Good Hygiene Practice: Spirit Drinks guidance. It is being developed for the whole of the spirits sector in line with requirements under European Food Law.

The SWA also helps members understand and comply with technical, scientific and food safety laws across all our export markets globally.

The Association works closely with the Edinburgh-based Scotch Whisky Research Institute to advise members on technical aspects of food safety law and best-practice. It maintains a strong working business relationship between the industry and the Food Standards Agency.
