Misleading Use of 'Whisky'
31 May 2012
Scotch Whisky is, of course, a type of whisky and competes
against whiskies of other origins. Many countries have a definition
of whisky to ensure consumers are not sold inferior spirits under
the description "whisky". It is in the SWA's interests to ensure
the reputation of whisky as a category is not damaged by the sale
of inferior products as 'whisky'. It also the SWA's role to help
ensure competitors do not gain an unfair price advantage, for
example by selling molasses-based alcohol or unaged spirits as
"whisky".
