CASE STUDIES IN CENTRAL SCOTLAND
FALKIRK DISTILLERY
An innovative partnership with biotechnology company MiAlgae aims to reduce the waste output, carbon emissions and water footprint of the distillery by recycling whisky co-products as feedstock to grow microalgae. Whisky co-products like pot ale and spent lees are transported from the distillery to be used in MiAlgae’s processes so that they can then be used as a nutritious pet food ingredient, reducing global reliance on wild-caught fish as a primary source of omega-3. There are plans for the co-location of distilleries and biotechnology facilities, which will create an on-site water recycling solution. The distillery started producing single malt in 2021, released in 2024. It is expected 80,000 visitors will visit every year and 60 members of staff have been employed from the local community.
ROSEBANK DISTILLERY
30 years after it shut its doors, Rosebank Distillery has undergone a four-year restoration project and will be welcoming visitors from June this year – set to become an important tourist destination for the area with six tasting rooms. The original mill, around 103 years old, has been restored and is still used during the production process. The landmark 108ft chimney stake has also been repaired.
WILLIAM GRANT & SONS
William Grant and Sons have their Bellshill Warehouse and customer service centre situated in Righead Industrial Estate and Strathclyde Business Park respectively. A source of employment for the constituency, they also offer a 12-week summer internship programme for students.
JACKTON DISTILLERY
A relatively new distillery, in the process of building its own on-site maltings facility and also grows its own barley in fields on the Jackton Estate.
Supports the community – sponsors East Kilbride Football Club, East Kilbride Women’s Rugby, East Kilbride Boxing Club and Iconic Gents hair. The distillery also supports local charities including Cash for Kids; Jessicas Helping Hand; Cancer Care Drivers; Kilbride Hospice; and East Kilbride Community Trust.
Internationally, it has established the RAER Alliance - a partnership between RAER Alliance and the Domaine National de Chambord to create unique bottles of Scottish spirits aged in barrels from the Royal Forest of Chambord. The bottle symbolises The Auld Alliance, signed more than 700 years ago between the Kingdoms of Scotland and France.
MASTERTON BOND
Artisanal Spirits plc, owner of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), opened its Masterton Bond bottling plant at Uddingston in March last year. The £2.5m plant has been fully operational since November 2022 and has 14 full-time employees on-site. Because the facility reduces the company’s reliance on third party bottlers, it has resulted in substantially reducing road miles involved in the manufacture and supply of the group’s products, helping to lower its carbon footprint. As of March 2023, the plant had been responsible for bottling over 70,000 bottles on the line and has made shipments to key markets internationally including China, the United States, Australia, Germany, France and Japan.
COMMUNITY ALCOHOL PARTNERSHIPS IN CENTRAL SCOTLAND
CAPs are partnerships between police, local authorities, schools, and retailers who work together to highlight the risks of underage drinking and improve the health and wellbeing of local children and young people. There are CAPs in Airdrie & Shotts, Falkirk West, Coatbridge & Chryston, two in Cumbernauld & Kilsyth, three in Motherwell & Wishaw, and in Uddingston & Bellshill.
Kilsyth
Kilsyth CAP's innovative youth engagement event at the local secondary school, Kilsyth Academy, has been recognised as a best practice model by partners and the Local Outcome Improvement Plan (LOIP).
The event, which combined engaging activities with education on vaping, alcohol, risky behaviours, careers, and volunteering opportunities, was hailed as a highly effective way to connect with young people. Due to its success, similar events are planned for other schools in the area, demonstrating the CAP's commitment to sharing best practices and expanding its reach.
Cumbernauld
...The launch of a Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) in Cumbernauld, to highlight the risks of underage drinking and improve the health and wellbeing of local young people. As part of the work in the community, local people are being asked for their views on crime and anti-social through a series of surveys which can be completed anonymously online. This will help the police and other agencies to better understand the experience of local people in the area, making communities safer and protecting young people from harm.
Wishaw & Shotts
The newly formed CAP which aims to work with youth services and local organisations to provide alcohol-free activities for young people. It will also work to educate young people about underage drinking and ensure that they are equipped to make the right decisions about issues such as alcohol, drugs and anti-social and criminal behaviour. Working with local retailers, the CAP also aims to prevent underage sales and ‘proxy’ sales, where adults buy alcohol for under-18s. The activity of the local CAP will be co-ordinated by community officers based at Wishaw Police Office.
Viewpark & Bellshill
The Viewpark and Bellshill CAP will work with youth services and local organisations to provide alcohol-free activities for young people. It will also work with local schools to educate young people about underage drinking and ensure that they are equipped to make the right decisions about issues such as alcohol and drugs and anti-social and criminal behaviour. Working with local retailers, the CAP also aims to help them avoid making underage sales and reduce ‘proxy’ sales where adults buy alcohol for under-18s.
Bainsford & Langlees
The partners of the Bainsford & Langlees CAP are made up of the Falkirk Community Planning Partnership.
The CAP will work to educate young people about underage drinking and help them to make better decisions about issues such as alcohol, drugs and anti-social behaviour.
Working with local retailers, the CAP also aims to prevent underage sales and ‘proxy’ sales, where adults buy alcohol for under-18s.
