CASE STUDIES IN HIGHLANDS & ISLANDS
BALMENACH DISTILLERY
Built an anaerobic digester and aerobic digester at its site (£4.5m investment), which is designed to reduce water consumption, to remove road haulage from the road and make its own electricity through waste streams.
Aerobic digester - spent lees and washing waters are able to be returned to the river which will result in 12 tankers taken off the road a week
Anaerobic digester – processes the pot ale, making biomethane used in a combined heating power plant (CHP) which produces electricity and heat for the distillery
GLENFIDDICH DISTILLERY
Became the first global spirits brand to start converting its transport fleet to run on green biogas made from the residues of its own distilling process Specially developed technology is used to convert production wastes and residues into an Ultra-Low Carbon Fuel (ULCF) gas that produces minimal carbon dioxide, which in turn reduces CO2 emissions by 95%, removing 250 tonnes of CO2 every year
SCAPA DISTILLERY
Pernod Ricard has invested in its Scapa Distillery by building a new tasting room to enhance tourism to the distillery. The new room, called the Scapa Noust, is situated on the clifftops with a ‘dramatic’ backdrop of the Orcadian landscape, and will be used to host immersive experiences for whisky tasters.
BRUICHLADDICH DISTILLERY
Using less and better packaging – redesigned the Classic Laddie Bottle to allow for 19% more glass per pallet into the distillery and 60% more product per pallet out. 32% lighter than the previous design Now 60% recycled glass, up from approximately 15%, with the aim to reach 97% or higher eventually (however, they need more recycled glass going back into to the system to enable this) Has seen a total reduction of 65% in CO2 in its packaging
INVERGORDON DISTILLERY
Invergordon Distillery will see its carbon output reduce as part of Project Nexus, a UK-wide carbon capture, utilisation and removal initiative led by Carbon Capture Scotland, in which biogenic CO₂ is captured using proprietary technology and transported to nearby utilisation and sequestration locations The CO₂ captured through this partnership will be used in the local industry, with the excess sequestered via geological stores, resulting in permanent carbon removal, according to Carbon Capture Scotland
THE GLENLIVET DISTILLERY
The Glenlivet Distillery has undergone major investment since 2021, with a new stillhouse opening to members of the public which will double the distillery’s capacity. The opening came a month before the Spirit of Speyside festival in May, where a new tour was made available at Glenlivet.
BUNNAHABHAIN DISTILLERY
Won the Sustainable Development of the Year Award at the Scottish Green Energy Awards 2022 for its Biomass Energy Centre Completed in 2022, it is fuelled with a mix of spent process malt (draff) and local woody biomass and saves 5500 tonnes of carbon emissions a year, representing a reduction of 95% over oil The project has improved biodiversity and wildlife habitats through replanting unmanaged conifer forest with hard and soft wood and peat bog is restored to its natural state. Wood ash will be used as forest fertiliser creating circular sustainability
ISLE OF RAASAY DISTILLERY
On an island of around 190 people, the Isle of Raasay Distillery provides 40 careers with an average age of approximately 30 and under. They also place a crucial role as a sponsor of events and clubs in the local community, with Skye Camanach, RNLI Lifeboats (Skye and Raasay) and Isle of Skye Gold Club as some examples in addition to work with local primary schools. In 2019, the distillery secured £200,000 investment from Highlands and Islands Enterprise to help fund bottling facilities and additional warehousing which created up to five local jobs.
GLENMORANGIE DISTILLERY
The Glenmorangie visitor centre underwent a revamp at the beginning of the year, with the shop, tasting rooms and museum restyled. The site will also host a new marquee from late spring onwards that will cater for “evening hosting and special events”. In addition a new range of tours and tastings will be offered to drive tourism to the distillery.
COMMUNITY ALCOHOL PARTNERSHIPS IN HIGHLANDS & ISLANDS
CAPs are partnerships between police, local authorities, schools, and retailers who work together to highlight the risks of underage drinking and improve the health and wellbeing of local children and young people. There are two CAPs in Highlands & Islands, located in Skye, Lochaber & Badenoch, and in the Orkney Islands.
Orkney Islands
Chair of the Orkney CAP, Bob MacKenzie, said: “Our aim is to tackle alcohol-related harm to young people and improve the quality of life for residents. The local Partnership also works closely with Stromness Academy and Kirkwall Grammar School to take a proactive approach to alcohol education, to ensure that young people are equipped to make the right decisions about issues including drugs, anti-social and criminal behaviour.
“The Partnership also works with local retailers to help them avoid making underage sales and reduce ‘proxy’ sales where adults buy alcohol for under-18s.
Fort William
The Fort William CAP will work with youth services and local organisations to provide alcohol-free activities for young people. It will also work with local schools to educate young people about underage drinking and ensure that they are equipped to make the right decisions about issues such as alcohol and drugs and anti-social and criminal behaviour.
