CASE STUDIES IN NORTH EAST SCOTLAND
GLENDRONACH DISTILLERY
The distillery has converted to Liquid Petroleum Gas as their main fuel which has resulted in a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by more than 10% per unit of production. In addition, fuel oil is no longer stored in bulk on site, which reduces the risk to the surrounding environment.
Brown-Forman announced in 2022 it would invest more than £30m in its GlenDronach Distillery, more than doubling its capacity to meet growing global demand. The new investment included the restoration of the former maltings building as a working production area and a three-year phased project to improve operational energy efficiencies at the distillery, which was established in 1826. The distiller also announced plans in 2024 to remodel a visitor centre and walled garden to improve its tourism offer.
FETTERCAIRN DISTILLERY
Established the Fettercairn 200 Club in 2020, meaning that for generations to come, every ear of barley used will be harvested from fields within a 50-mile radius of the distillery. The distillery has also so far planted 13,000 oak saplings on land next to it in the hopes it can use Scottish oak for its casks in the future.
ARDMORE DISTILLERY - SUNTORY GLOBAL SPIRITS
Launched an initiative known as the Peatland Water Sanctuary in 2021, a large-scale series of peatland restoration and conservation and watershed conservation projects in Scotland Plan to invest more than £3m in the restoration and conservation of peatlands and watersheds throughout Scotland by 2030 Overall, Beam Suntory aims to restore and conserve 1,300 hectares of peatland by 2030, and 2,600 hectares by 2040
ROYAL LOCHNAGAR DISTILLERY
Located in close proximity to Balmoral, the Royal Lochnager Distillery saw over 49,000 visitors in 2023, a major contributor to Diageo experiencing a million visits to its brand home experiences last year.
ARBIKIE DISTILLERY
The distillery has built four mirrored cabins on their Highland estate, built by a company which specialises in nature-focused houses. This builds on the opening of their distillery experience with tours and tastings focusing on whisky, gin and vodka and cocktail making in 2022. Sustainability wise, the distillery has photovoltaic panels on the roof and its distillation co-products are returned to the fields as natural fertilisers or fed to its highland cattle. Arbikie has planted approximately 1000 juniper plants a year (currently under threat from a pathogen) in addition to 1000's of hedges, peas and oak trees – which will allow the distillery to have its own new oak casks for maturing whisky in the future.
