CASE STUDIES IN SOUTH SCOTLAND
BORDERS DISTILLERY
Opened in March 2018, the Borders Distillery founders wanted to support regeneration efforts by investing in refurbishing an existing building in Hawick, creating employment opportunities and a tourist attraction, bringing thousands of visitors to the area each year. The distillery is a conversion of the former Edwardian electrical works, and is the first Scotch Whisky Distillery in the Scottish Borders since 1837, winning the RIAS Conservation and Climate Change Award 2019 and the EAA Architectural Awards 2019 – Regeneration/Conservation Award. Borders Distillery has formed long-term partnerships with 12 local Borders farmers, within 35 miles, who supply all the grain used to make the spirit. It is working its way to becoming a Zero Waste distillery - the organic by-product from distillation going to local farms where it is used to grow plants. In turn the organic by-product from those farms goes back in turn to the barley fields – making for a circular economy within Borders farming, with the distillery at its centre.
MOFFAT DISTILLERY
A newer distillery, Moffat is Scotland’s first wood-fired distillery and was designed to allow people to come together and share the process. The flexible design means it can also be used for events such as music gigs, whisky blending workshops and private events. Using a variety of energy sources, the distillery aims to be self-sufficient by 2030 and is working towards a zero-waste process, from the materials in its supply chain to the finished product, with the wood used collected from local, sustainable sources.
BLADNOCH DISTILLERY
After a period of inactivity and under new ownership, the refurbishment of Bladnoch Distillery started in 2015 and resumed production in 2017. In 2019 it launched a Visitor Centre experience, gift shop and Melba Café, becoming an important tourist site in the area.
ANNANDALE DISTILLERY
Announced in June 2023, Annandale will be the first distillery in the world to use new thermal energy storage technology. A new ‘decarbonisation machine’ which can replace up to 100% of the fossil fuels currently used in high temperature industrial processes will be installed and used to produce a carbon-neutral whisky. The new technology has been developed by new University of Edinburgh spinout, Exergy3 and was awarded funding from the UK Government’s £55m Industrial Fuel Switching Competition, as part of the £1bn Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP), for the distillery trial.
ST BOSWELL'S DISTILLERY
Planning permission has been granted for a grain distillery on Charlesfield Industrial Estate in the Scottish Borders, St. Boswells Distillery. The distillery will be Scotland’s lowest carbon Grain Distillery, adding value to locally grown cereals, using up to date distilling technology, adding to the circular economy, reducing carbon emissions and maximising recycling with zero waste to landfill. The approved planning application will facilitate a £46m investment in the local economy, creating around 200 construction roles and 20 permanent, high-value jobs supporting the rural community.
