COMMUNITY ALCOHOL PARTNERSHIPS IN WEST SCOTLAND
CAPs are partnerships between police, local authorities, schools, and retailers who work together to highlight the risks of underage drinking and improve the health and wellbeing of local children and young people.
In West Scotland, there are four Community Alcohol Partnerships - two covering Strathkelvin & Bearsden, and Clydebank & Milngavie, and two in East Renfrewshire, covering Renfrewshire South and Eastwood.
East Renfrewshire
The East Renfrewshire CAP will work with youth services and local organisations to provide alcohol-free activities for young people. It will also work with local schools to educate young people about underage drinking and ensure that they are equipped to make the right decisions about issues such as alcohol and drugs and anti-social and criminal behaviour.
CASE STUDIES IN WEST SCOTLAND
ARDGOWAN DISTILLERY
The Ardgowan Distillery aims to be completed in 2025 and will be carbon neutral with a visitor centre, with the site located 45 minutes’ drive from Glasgow city centre. By using extensive heat recovery at each stage of the production process as well as CO2 capture from fermentation, the distillery will be carbon negative. It will also have a cooling tower to minimise the consumption of water and eliminate the discharge of hot water into the Kip River.
It has also partnered with Heriot-Watt University, Briggs of Burton, and Hydrogen Green Power to research a solution for the capture and use of the carbon dioxide generated during the fermentation process. Options include use of hydrogen to convert the CO2 into methane gas which can be used for heating the stills.
With the visitor centre and close proximity to Glasgow, the distillery is looking to become an important hub for tourism and therefore a driver of jobs in the area.
KILMALID WAREHOUSE
Towards the end of 2023, Chivas Brothers put forward plans to invest in the expansion of its Kilmalid bottling site after the development was granted planning permission in the summer. The expansion aims to improve site safety in addition to work on the surrounding land to protect community walkways and ensure easy access around the site for Dumbarton residents.
Public transport links will also be improved as part of the investment, as well as diversifying the options employees have to travel to work. This includes public access footpaths, installing electric vehicle charging stations and adding cycle lanes and secure cycle storage. Future plans include habitat rehabilitation and improved public access from Dumbarton alongside the River Leven, which flows adjacent to the campus.
More than half of the people working at the Kilmalid campus are local to the Dunbartonshire area.
LOCH LOMOND DISTILLERY
One of only four distilleries in Scotland to have its own on-site cooperage and employs one apprentice a year, offering a four-year training programme.
The industry as a whole has been actively training new apprentices and there are now over 300 skilled coopers across Scotland.
The Whisky Exchange chose Loch Lomond 18 Year Old as its Whisky of the Year for 2024.
AUCHENTOSHAN DISTILLERY
Situated on the outskirts of Clydebank, Auchentoshan unusually practices triple distillation and for a while was the only distillery in Scotland to do so.
Showing the history of Scotch whisky, the distillery was badly damaged during raids in World War II.
It has a visitor centre and offers a wide range of tours, bringing in tourists visiting Glasgow.
Owned by Beam Suntory, the distillery is widening its market and in 2022 opened a pop-up at Taiwan Taoyuan Airport showcasing this Scottish export to a large number of international travellers.
Including staff at Auchentoshan, Beam Suntory employs around 400 people in Scotland.
It celebrated its 200 year anniversary in September 2023 with a festival featuring up-and-coming Glasgow funk and jazz artists and local bakers.
